Summers in the Northern Hemisphere are hot—and they’re getting hotter. Research has found that temperatures have risen across many U.S. cities since the 1970s, and it’s not going to slow down anytime soon: In 2024, CO₂ levels grew at the fastest annual rate on record.
So it makes sense that CR staffers have been seeing neck fans everywhere lately. Walking the dog, getting groceries, taking the baby to day care, and any other activity that requires being outside (which, when you live in a pedestrian-oriented place and don’t have a car, is a lot of them) are exceedingly difficult when temperatures get very high. At outdoor sports tournaments and amusement parks, it’s reasonable to assume these little fans are nearly mandatory to withstand those high temperatures.
