By the time I had my fifth child, I had accumulated no shortage of baby gear. But as I embarked on another round of shopping for baby essentials, I faced a serious mom dilemma: What makes the perfect diaper bag? Does it even exist? I’ve had diaper bags that were too small, ones that were too large, and diaper bags that were poorly designed for a messy change on the go.

I had never really found a good diaper bag to meet all of my—and my kids’—needs. So when I set out to evaluate some of the top trending diaper bags, I had high standards. After testing 17 diaper bags for around a month each over the last three years, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they have evolved since my first child was born in 2014.

    More on Diapering Essentials

I evaluated my top diaper bag picks below based on comfort, functionality, style, and size. I sought to answer questions for every mom who texted me for my recommendation as a “veteran parent,” including the best diaper bags for both parents, the best changing mat, diaper bags with accessible pockets, the best style and fabrics, and the best size that fits the essentials. After all, that extra change of baby clothes is a must—who knows when the next diaper blowout will be?

Not only are newer bags more stylish than in years past, but they also feature built-in hooks to latch onto your stroller, intuitive diaper-changing stations, pockets designed for the latest smartphones, and nooks and crannies to hold pacifiers. Modern diaper bags are a far cry from a basic tote or purse—and we’re here for it.

    Everyday Backpacks

Backpack diaper bags are a parent’s best friend—because we need all the free hands we can get. Backpacks are also typically sturdy, and some can sit up on their own on the floor, which means no tipped bottles or sippy cups. A larger backpack diaper bag can mean room for parent essentials, too. I like being able to bring my own large water bottle tucked into a backpack’s side compartment. Here are some backpack diaper bags worth checking out.
