BMW Z3 First Drive
Introduction
This line includes roadster and coupe models in both standard and higher-performance M forms. A standard stability-control system in the Z3 helps rein in the car's once-twitchy rear end. The ride is firm but not punishing. The handling, while competent, isn't extraordinary. In fact, a 3-Series convertible is more practical and fun to drive. The five-speed manual shifts crisply, and braking is excellent, but the tight cockpit feels confining. A punchy 2.5-liter, 184-hp inline Six is now the base engine. The 3.0-liter Six puts out 225 horses but adds thousands to the car's price. The M models have an even stronger, 315-hp engine.
