    What Owners Say

    Cruise control

""Would need editing for punctuation to quote: Lemon 1st day. Cruise intermittently unavailable. Fixed by turning engine off then on again. Dealership replaced cruise power switch twice. Still same & told we need to see it (work in different city; couldnt get there before closing on Fri. after work). Stopped at a dealership along hwy route & left car running so service manager could drive car & directly observe issue & the fix: off/on. He wrote note for me on business card. Employee at MY dealership looked at card/note and asked, So, what do you want me to do about it? (very dismissive tone); I reiterated THEIR request to observe the problem, my difficulty getting to Kingston in time and Hyundai policy: any dealership service centre able to help. CRICKETS! Never fixed! Meanwhile, each time they replaced the switch they reported non-existent, major $$ problem: e.g. full brakes and rotors in dire condition. I drove to mechanic friend who observed pristine front brakes, slight wear on rear, all rotors fine. The cruise proved a minor problem vs what emerged over next many months: seized back right calliper that wore out brake pad. Im very easy on brakes (so say mechanics). I couldnt understand the wear, nor the jumpy manual clutch (turned out to be related) given I am seasoned on manual & easy on clutch. I refused to go to Kingston dealership due to dishonest, incompetent garage. Met with service manager in a Toronto dealership whose team identified calliper/brake problem and I opened a complaint ticket with Hyundai Canada. Very disappointing when they paid for calliper but not brake pad wear. Problem not solved. New calliper seizing again, but I went back to new dealership to deal with jumpy clutch asking manager for class A mechanic not factory trained technician given history of problems. Mechanic said I needed new fly wheel (100% wrong). Disgusted, I took car to trusted non-Hyundai mechanic to safety it while I bought used Toyota. When I returned for the Sonata my 80 yr old, class A, master mechanic had solved the calliper/brake/clutch issue: a kinked hydraulic line behind the back right wheel! Decided I would feel terrible selling SUCH a lemon and could do better re $$ to sell the Toyota third-hand. Totally done with Hyundai. Engine fineyesbut I was mistreated by the company & by dealership employees. I switched to Hyundai from Toyota on basis of CR car ratings of Hyundai performance, reliability, etcstudied reports 5 years prior. I got bitten! Still driving the Sonata because havent been in position to replace it. No A/C for 4 yrs now. I do know people who love their Hyundais. CR needs to start rating companies for garages & how they manage lemons. My car = built on a Friday pm. Even the FM radio on bitter cold winter mornings behaves like the cruise: no sound & fixed by turning car off/on. Cruise and radio = electronics, maybe broken wire or insulation. Kinked hydraulic line = utter incompetence and, likely, laziness.""

Anonymous A., MD (2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS Unsure)
    Other brakes problem

"The brake line collapsed causing the pads to stay applied to the rotor. Rotor overheated above 250 degrees"

Anonymous, IL (2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited 3.3-L V6)
    Premature brake wear

"Since 2020 (approx), I have experienced more trouble with premature failure with my brakes, calipers, rotors, pads than anything else. Every 2 years these and other breaking components had to be changed and these are very costly repairs. I did extensive online research and other 2009 owners have reported they were having the same severe issues for thir 2009-2011 cars. Hyundai has yet to recognize this recurring issue. That is the only major issue I have been dealing with with this car. Otherwise, i have been very satisfied with my car. I have been faithful with my maintenance schedule throughout the years."

Control arm separation may suddenly change the rear wheel alignment, affecting the handling of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Summary:
Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Sonata vehicles manufactured March 1, 2005, through January 21, 2010; and model year 2006-2011 Azera vehicles manufactured September 27, 2005, through November 22, 2010 originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Road salt and water can enter portions of the rear crossmember, leading to corrosion of the crossmember steel. This may lead to detachment of one of the rear control arms.
    What should you do:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will repair or replace the crossmember assembly. The recall began on October 8, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai Customer Care Center at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall number is 113.
    For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

    EXTERIOR LIGHTING
    Apr 01, 2013
Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
    Summary:
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
    What should you do:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.
    For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
