    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    12V battery

"Reported to tesla via tesla app- service was identified and was serviced at my home with new battery within 40 minutes from time first sent."

Anonymous, CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

"Battery failed without any advanced warning that it needed to be replaced"

Anonymous, CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

""Battery expired at months, no notice, shut down entire car""

Anonymous, TN (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

""12v battery warning, I replaced it with a more expensive lithium battery thinking it was better but still had the warning. Took it to the dealer and was informed my model can't use a lithium battery. I bought one of theirs and returned the lithium battery, problem solved. Front suspension developed an annoying squeak, dealer replaced ball joints on both sides""

Anonymous A., OK (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

""The 12V battery died without warning in our driveway. The car was inoperable and blocked the garage entry so that we could not use our other car. Tesla did tow the car and replace the battery at no cost to us, but it was extremely inconvenient to have the car suddenly become inoperable.""

Anonymous A., CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

"The 12v battery failed suddenly and without warning. It is a lead acid battery and had reached the end of its lifespan. The battery was not the issue. It was what happened after. All the 12v systems failed. The car had to be towed to a service center. Tesla charged me nearly $300 for a diagnostic before replacing the battery. Then, they referenced their battery replacement guidelines as needed. So, I guess they are okay with their customers having this type of problem every 2-5 years. Unsatisfactory."

Anonymous, CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

"12 volt battery went out without warning. Car cannot be used and we were stranded."

Anonymous, TX (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Automatic wipers

"On most grey days, the auto wipers go when the ws is dry- usually several times, and occcasionally on bright days, but often do not go when the glass is quite wet, even if the car is steering itself. There is provision to set wipers to manual, but the manual control is diabolical. One press of a button on the end of a lever brings one wipe and a small window on the screen (near the bottom) which is there for less than 3 seconds with which driver can set a wiper setting. There is no way to set wipers on high quickly! Once self driving is turned on, wipers automatically return to auto."

Anonymous A., VT (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Other electrical system problem

""This is related to the 12V battery failure. Nothing in the car, including the electronic door latches and windows work when the 12V battery dies. My wife was not familiar with the emergency exit door latch and was stuck in the car until I got home from work.""

Anonymous A., CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

""The car started having random issues of thinking the driver was in or not in the car first experienced as key lock not working, shift to Drive not engaging, display during off (because no driver was sensed in the car) but then turned into a major failure when the air noticed that the occupancy sensor in the seats had failed and it was unable to control the airbag deployment. Tesla was able to replace this part and the issues solved but then a week later the sensor got disconnected again and the problem restarted. They fixed it and since we have been good. That said, it took a lot of documentation and evidence gathering to get them to even take the car in for something that ultimately could have led to a safety failure.""

Anonymous, MA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

    EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

    What Owners Say

    Electric/hybrid battery pack replacement

"Batteries stop working after 18 months"

Anonymous, CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Standard Electric)

""battery would not hold charge; tesla replaced, provided vech while awaiting maintenance-great service- no cost""

Anonymous, CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

""A warning appeared on the screen stating the battery could only be charged up to 50% and that I had to bring in the car for service. The nearest service station was 90 miles away and I could not make an appointment until about 10 days after the message first appeared. I reduced my driving during that 10-day period, so the battery level went below 50%, but when I tried to charge it I was unable to do so. Fortunately, I was able to make it to the service station without needing to be towed due to an empty battery. The battery itself had to be replaced. I believe they replaced it with a refurbished battery. I can say with certainty that the replacement battery holds considerably less charge than the original battery did, and it charges more slowly as well. During the servicing, Tesla provided me with a loaner vehicle. Everything was covered under warranty, so there was no cost other than the general aggravation and the considerable personal time needed to drop off and pick up the car 90 miles away.""

Anonymous A., PA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

"There was an apparent failure of the battery and Tesla replaced the battery pack free of charge."

Anonymous A., WA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

""June or July 2024 noted that battery would not charge more than the current level, approximately 50% at that time. Brought car to nearest Tesla service center. Battery replaced in 3-4 days, loaner provided.""

Anonymous, PA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

""A new battery was installed Nov. 2024, and failed April 2025. Covered under warranty.""

Anonymous, ID (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

"I got an error message that it would only charge to 50% capacity. I alerted Tesla and they said it needed to be replaced. It was replaced without cost under warranty."

Anonymous, MI (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

    Suspension/Steering

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

"1 rear wheel was out of alignment. It was at -0.5 instead of at +0.15"

Anonymous A., WA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Bushings

"Front suspension bushings torn, made squeaking noise. Replaced under extended service plan."

Anonymous, OR (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Other steering/suspension problem

""There was an occasional creaking sound from the rear. It was hard to reproduce, but I left it with the service center and they figured it out. Both read knuckle assemblies were replaced under warranty.""

Anonymous, BC (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Power steering

"lost power steering, had to replace the steering column and the harness. It was not covered by warranty which expired 3 months before this happened"

Anonymous, VA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

""squealing when compressed, like when going over speed bumps, we would hear squeaking.""

Anonymous, FL (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Tie rods

""Started with a weird clicking sound, after a couple service visits, they finally realized the suspension system was having issues. They replaced a tie rod and a strut (I forgot the right name for the front vs back, dont quote me exactly). That said even after the fix, I have to get the car aligned every 6 months and every time it has significant adjustments needed. Doesnt feel right. What I save on oil changes, I spend on alignment""

Anonymous, MA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

Anonymous, FL (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Display screen goes blank

""Display screen goes blank, it is still drivable but no indication of speed, no radio, or other activity.""

Anonymous, PA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"The auxiliary battery failure cause the window to get damaged because they would not lower to close the door. It also seemed to make the tailgate latch not work anymore."

Anonymous, CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"cant pair with my android phone"

Anonymous, TX (2021 Tesla Model Y Standard Electric)

""After a software update som months ago I have been unable to hear phone calls nor be heard. I have unpaired and re-paired and recently it briefly worked correctly, but then stopped again. The car does connect the call and disconnect the call, you just cannot hear/be heard.""

Anonymous, NC (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

"On various times phone wouldn't connect with car. Couldn't open car. The time could be several days to several weeks. And then it would rectify itself. Took care to dealership and they couldn't fix and recommended reinstall the app. But then the car rectified itself. Would happen in my garage or in parking lot. No rhyme or reason."

Anonymous, PA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

"Heat pump failed on trip. This unit is responsible for battery as well as climate control. Replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, VA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Evaporator

"They found that the A/C radiator was clogged with dust and dirt. They tried to clean it but couldnt. so they replaced it."

Anonymous, CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Other climate system problem

"filter system had to be upgraded"

Anonymous, TN (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

    Noises/Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other noises & leaks problem

    "Road noise and hard ride"

Anonymous, FL (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Squeaks or rattles

""Something in the back seat is squeaking. I thought it was the head-rest bars, but I've taken care of that but there's still squeaking back there whenever we go over a bump (lots of those). My son thinks it may be the seat lock. Whatever it is, the squeaking and rattling from that seat makes the car sound cheap.""

Anonymous A., MI (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

""There was some bushing involved in the steering that was squeaking outside the vehicle that was EMBARASSING with every bounce, break, and accelleration. It made me want to drive ANY other car.""

Anonymous, OR (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

    Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

    What Owners Say

    Seat belts

"A sensor that is part of the seat belt / air bag system failed. The car warned me and indicated service was required. Nevertheless, Tesla still charged nearly $200 to diagnose the problem. It was nearly a $700 fix on a four year old car. I understand these things happen, but it concerns me that when small components like this fail in such a complex system they can render the car unusable or unsafe and cost a lot to replace. It makes me wonder about the long term viability of this vehicle."

Anonymous, CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)
    Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"The interior trim on the lift gate keeps coming loose. I am constantly reattaching it with double sided tape. That is unacceptable on a $50000 vehicle."

Anonymous, CA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

    Electric Motor

Electric drive failure, replacement or malfunction.

    What Owners Say

Electric drive motor failure - replacement

""Just a couple months after having to get the battery replaced, the front drive motor failed and had to be replaced. Its failure meant that the car's acceleration was diminished. It might have impacted its handling in slippery conditions, but I did not drive in snow while the front motor was not functioning, so I cannot say for sure. The main impact of the failed front motor was that I had to drive 90 miles one-way to the nearest dealer to have the car repaired. I was provided a loaner vehicle and the replacement was done under warranty. The two roundtrips added up to 360 miles of driving to have the repair done. A secondary issue was that each time we started the car to go somewhere, it would take about 1 minute for it to determine that the front motor was not working, and then it would ask the driver if it was okay to proceed.""

Anonymous A., PA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

    EV Charging

Won't charge at home; won't work with some public chargers; won't fully charge; charge connection; charge port door.

""Gap, new, Interior cover of driverside A pillar. Possible enlarged gaps in door panels.""

Anonymous, PA (2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range Electric)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.
