3 Best Ice Cream Scoopers of 2026, Evaluated and Reviewed

It’s always the right season for ice cream—if you can get it out of the carton. We tested eight ice cream scoopers from brands including Zeroll, Oxo Good Grips, and Thrifty and found three that handled even chunky cookie-dough ice cream like champs.

We are big fans of ice cream in my home. After dinner, my kids clean up the kitchen, and one will remind the other to “Take out the ice cream so it has time to thaw.” If, heaven forbid, someone forgets to pull the carton from the freezer, they end up dramatically hacking at a rock-solid mound, heaving with effort and failing to extract even a single scoop.

My generic ice cream scooper clearly isn’t cutting it.

I jumped at the chance to test eight ice cream scoopers from brands you’ve probably heard of—like Oxo Good Grips and KitchenAid—and some you may not know but have cult status. I was surprised by the sheer variety of ice cream scoop styles available. You can purchase round scoopers, oblong ones, one shaped like a stapler, and an elegant $50 scooper that weighs nearly 1 pound.

But the true test of whether a scooper is right for you comes down to four points: can you scoop frozen ice cream without thawing it first, is it comfortable to hold and handle, does it do a good job scooping chunky flavors as well as your plain vanillas and chocolates, and how does it make ice cream look in the bowl (because a pretty scoop is better than a mangled one)? I enlisted the help of my husband and 12-year-old son Colin, a connoisseur of ice cream, to test each scooper. Here are our three favorites and how the rest performed.

Ice cream expert Colin, 12, and his mom Lisa test the ice cream scoopers to find their faves—and the ones they simply can't understand.
