If you’ve ever used a pocket-sized power bank to recharge your phone, you’ll appreciate the utility of a portable power station. It’s essentially a large rechargeable lithium-ion battery with an array of outlets you can use to power appliances and other devices in your home and on the road.
It can keep your gear running at a campsite or a tailgate party and, yes, during a power outage, too (though only for a limited stretch of time). Keep in mind that portable power stations won’t keep electric appliances and devices running for nearly as long as comparably sized generators, says Paolo Fu, who leads generator and portable power station testing for Consumer Reports. But power stations can be a great alternative to generators during short outages, of say, a couple of hours, or may last longer if you’re powering only a few key essentials at once.
“Portable power stations can be handy during an outage to charge your phone, make emergency calls, stay in touch with loved ones, and keep a fridge or freezer running a little longer,” Fu says. “They are best for outages that last for hours, not days.”

What Can You Do With a Portable Power Station?
The right-sized battery power station can deliver enough electricity to run essential systems and appliances, but only for a relatively short time. Smaller models can keep a laptop running and a few lights on, while much larger ones can be daisy-chained into a whole-house backup power solution.
Your first task is to decide which devices and appliances you want to power and how much capacity you need to get the job done. Because a larger appliance like a refrigerator can kick on and off and cause a power surge, our experts recommend that you leave a little leeway between the total wattage of your appliances and the maximum power of your station. To help figure out what a portable power station can handle and for how long, take a look at the “claimed capacity” in watt hours (Wh) as well as the “claimed output” in watts in our ratings chart, Fu says. You’ll need to divide the power station’s capacity by its output to get a sense of how long the power station will run at full capacity.
For example, the top model in our ratings, the EcoFlow Delta, has a claimed output of 3,600 watts and a claimed capacity of 3,600 watt-hours. If you want the EcoFlow working at full strength, delivering 3,600 watts to power all of the electronics you can—say, a refrigerator, laptop, television, five to 10 lights, and a medium window air conditioner—it would run for just one hour.
If you want the EcoFlow to continuously power just your refrigerator, which draws about 700 watts, the power station would run for more than 5 hours on battery alone. (If you add the solar panel, it would extend the run time slightly, depending on solar conditions.)
A power station can also be used like an inverter generator to supply power at a campsite or a tailgate party. Indeed, power stations have become a staple on the road for those who revel in the adventures of van life.
They’re also a bit more flexible than generators at delivering power because they often supplement standard 120-volt, three-prong outlets with USB-A and USB-C ports for powering phones, laptops, and portable speakers.
If you plan to take a portable power station on the road and use it outdoors, make sure you understand what kind of weather it can handle, Fu says. “Most solar panels we tested can handle any weather, but the power station itself may not be able to,” he says. “You don’t want to use the power station in the rain unless the manufacturer states that it’s waterproof.”
Or if you are using one in a dusty climate, make sure the manufacturer rates it for dust.
Advantages of a Portable Power Station
Here are the best reasons to invest in a portable power station:
It’s quiet. Because it doesn’t have an engine, a portable power station is very quiet. Many don’t even have a cooling fan, so those—including the ones we’ve tested—are dead silent. (If your power station doesn’t have a cooling fan, Fu says to make sure to monitor it in the heat.) While tranquility may not be a huge consideration when your electricity is out, a near-silent power source at a campsite allows you to hear the lilting birdsong of a wood thrush instead of the rumble of a generator.
It doesn’t emit dangerous carbon monoxide fumes. As a result, portable power stations don’t require the safety precautions of a generator, which include outdoor placement at least 20 feet from a home or garage, with the exhaust directed away from windows, doors, and air conditioners. You can run a power station in your kitchen, basement, or garage, so you don’t need an awning to keep the unit dry, as you would with a generator. That makes a power station a compelling alternative for apartment dwellers who want emergency backup power but lack the outdoor space to run a generator.
It has excellent power quality. All of the power stations we’ve tested earn top marks for power quality, which is the ability to deliver clean power without the dips and spikes that can damage sensitive electronics. Their power quality is higher than most standard (noninverter) generators we’ve tested.
Disadvantages of a Portable Power Station
Here are the reasons you might choose to avoid a portable power station:
It isn’t always convenient. The biggest disadvantage is that, like any battery, your power station will run out of power. And when that happens, you have to disconnect the unit and recharge it—a process that can take hours. That’s an inconvenience if you’re using the power station to charge your laptop, but it’s a major problem if you’re relying on it to keep food cold or power vital medical equipment. A generator has a big advantage here. Yes, it can run out of fuel, but when that happens, you just turn it off and refill the tank from a gas can, with only the briefest interruption of power.
Its recharge rate can be slow. Not all portable power stations recharge at the same rate. When calculating Overall Scores, our testers assign the highest weight to recharge speed. Each of the models we’ve tested has portable solar panels that can recharge it, but the process is often slow, especially when the sky is overcast. You’re better off using the panels to extend the battery’s range, not to recharge it. And just as the power stations recharge at different rates, they deplete at different rates, too. Some are more efficient than others when powering the same load and can last longer.
It’s heavy. And, for what it’s worth, portable power stations are not always easy to transport. Some heavier models come with wheels, like the 97-pound EcoFlow Delta Pro. But other models in our ratings don’t. CR evaluates handles as part of the portability rating because even lighter models—ranging from 30 to 60 pounds—should have one that’s easy to grip.
It’s expensive. Finally, portable power stations are quite expensive. Our top-rated model—the EcoFlow Delta Pro—puts out 3,600 watts and costs more than $2,500. For comparison, you can buy a highly rated 3,900-watt inverter generator like the Generac iQ5200DF for about $1,000.
Should You Buy a Portable Power Station?
It ultimately comes down to how you plan to use it.
Our ratings chart can help you zero in on a model that delivers high-quality power. But for many people, a gas-powered generator will be cheaper and more effective in a lengthy power outage, such as after a storm or other natural disaster.
But if a portable power station’s most important virtues—quiet operation and the placement flexibility that comes with a lack of dangerous emissions—suit your needs, you might find it worthwhile to pay more than you would for a comparably sized generator.
How CR Tests Portable Power Stations
In our labs, CR test engineers evaluate five key measures to rate portable power stations: recharge speed, power delivery, power quality, portability, and ease of use. We don’t test the manufacturer’s run time claims, nor do we include noise evaluations in our ratings, because we found that, as a category, portable power stations run silently.
Recharge speed is based on how quickly the station charges while plugged into a 120-volt power source and while using the power station’s accompanying solar panels.
Power delivery is based on how well the voltage is maintained and how well the unit handles surges in power. Higher power output means more equipment can be run simultaneously. Power quality reflects the station’s ability to deliver clean power over various loads.
To assess portability, we evaluate the power station’s ergonomics. To assess ease of use, we evaluate features including the number of outlets, USB port outputs, whether the power station has clear indicators of remaining power, and whether it comes with a companion app.
