It’s time for Memorial Day sales. With the holiday less than two weeks away, we’re seeing plenty of early sales. This is typically a great time for big-ticket purchases like a new mattress and large appliances, but there are other opportunities to get big discounts. With the summer season nearly upon us, retailers are offering discounts on items you may need for the backyard, such as lawn care tools, smokeless fire pits, grills, and more. And you can often find better-than-normal prices for non-seasonal items, from kitchen appliances to vacuums, fitness gear, and more.
Consumer Reports has been tracking prices on the best products we’ve tested in our labs or tried in our homes to help you find what you want and need. These are just some of the highlights of what’s on sale for Memorial Day. If you don’t see what you want here, check our Deals hub.
Grills
The Kamado Joe Classic is on sale for the first time in well over a year, making this an opportune time to hit that buy button. It’s our top-rated ceramic kamado and comes packed with features, including a few that make it a stellar smoker. It has an elevated rack and comes with a heat deflector for smoking meats, both of which allow you to easily slow-cook, say, a brisket, without drying it out. It also has adjustable dampers and a locking lid, which help control the flow of air so that you can maintain a low and slow smoke for hours on end. It excelled at slow-cooking a pork shoulder in our tests, as well as at cooking a thin-crust pizza over high heat, helping it earn a rating of Excellent for cooking performance.
Sunscreen
This Neutrogena spray is $3 less than it was last month, making it a perfect opportunity to stock up. It is very good in overall performance across the board, with excellent UVA protection and very good protection from sunburn-producing rays. It does not meet its labeled SPF 50 in CR’s tests, but the protection is still adequate. It has a moderately strong tropical, fruity aroma and leaves a slightly greasy film and a notable sheen on the skin.
Outdoor Essentials
The Inno Stage differs from most smokeless fire pits because it’s designed to burn wood pellets, not logs. When we tested it, we found that using pellets with additives to accelerate lighting—sold at most home centers and hardware stores—worked particularly well, resulting in robust small or large fires with minimal smoke. Results weren’t as good when we used plain wood pellets, which tended to smoke quite a bit. It’s only about half as deep as the Cuisinart above and has considerably less capacity. We found that the Inno Stage burned pellets thoroughly, with minimal ash and unburned pellets left behind. The ash collects in a tray on its stand, making for easy removal. This model is a great choice if you want a modest pellet fire and prefer to avoid the hassle and labor of moving and lighting logs.
The Grand Patio umbrella is one of the more expensive patio umbrellas we tested and one of the larger options in our ratings. It got above-average scores in CR’s tests for ease of use and assembly, but it’s a little less rigid than higher-scoring models.

Lawn Care
The Makita XUX02SM1X1 has a 13-inch cutting swath and gets excellent marks for trimming, edging, and tackling tall grass and weeds. It gets a very good score for handling, but only a midrange score for battery run time. It’s a bit heavier, weighing just over 10 pounds. The Makita XUX02SM1X1 is also part of Makita’s 18-volt battery platform. For most users, the model above is the better bet, but it’s not always in stock—plus the prices for each model can fluctuate.
The Ego LB7654, now $50 less than it was last week at Amazon, delivers all-star performance across the board, adept at loosening and sweeping, all in an easy-to-handle package despite weighing 9.9 pounds. In addition, this electric blower comes with a generous five-year warranty. As a brand, Ego battery handheld leaf blowers are very reliable and earn a top mark for owner satisfaction in our latest member surveys.
This Greenworks pressure washer gets solid ratings in CR’s tests, especially when it comes to ease of use, where it got top marks. It also scored above average for cleaning and noise. It gets a middling score for power. Our testers also noted that it has a manual trigger lock, a small spray angle, and a shorter hose than most models, all of which are less than ideal. On the flip side, we found that it’s very effective at removing stains, and it’s easy to move and operate.
Vacuums
This Black+Decker POWERSERIES Extreme BSV2020P vacuum performs well in CR’s tests overall but struggled at edge cleaning. A few pluses: It’s self-standing, has a brush on/off switch, and features a filter cleaning dial that empties the filter dust into the dustbin to prevent your hands from getting dirty. In CR tests, it runs for about 30 minutes per charge on low and 10 minutes on the high setting. The batteries can be used in other Black + Decker products. A few caveats: If you grab the dustbin while vacuuming, it may disengage. The vac is also a bit wobbly in self-standing mode.
For a less expensive option than other robovacs, the Eufy C10 T2292 is a great choice if you don’t have too many carpeted areas in your home. While it’s only middling at cleaning dust and debris from carpets, it’s excellent at cleaning bare laminate floors in our lab tests. The vacuum is also impressive at cleaning up pet hair, making it ideal for pet owners.
This vacuum’s body is slimmer than those of the other vacuums we’ve tested, and its low clearance means it’s less likely to get caught under furniture. Although the vacuum’s dustbin is on the smaller side, that might not be much of a problem, because the vacuum automatically deposits debris into a self-emptying station.
If you’re in the market for a vacuum that can mop as well, but you don’t want to spend too much, this Eureka model could be a good fit. It’s the lowest-cost model we’ve tested, and you can get it at a great discount right now. The Eureka combo vac-mop scored very well (though not exceptionally) in wet and dry pickup and stain removal. It received only middling scores for ease of use and run time, but it may be worth dealing with a shorter battery life if it means staying under budget.

Mattresses
If you’re looking for a soft mattress, the Casper Dream is a solid pick, providing pressure relief and comfort to those who need it. It was recently about $100 less, but this is still a nice discount. In our lab evaluation, we found the model—a newbie to CR’s ratings—to be a standout for petite back sleepers, and it serves all other sizes and positions very well. The Dream scores well for durability, too, so you can expect to get sound sleep on it for eight to 10 years. If you sleep with a partner, you should feel very little vibration from their movement. CR members give Casper mattresses high marks for comfort and owner satisfaction.
The Dream Max is also on sale at Casper. These two are very similar, but the Max is a little thicker and more luxurious. It also gets a better score for petite side sleepers, but otherwise CR’s test results are similar for both models.
The Essentia Stratami is one of the top performers in CR’s tests, especially if you sleep on your back. Unlike the other Essentia mattresses on this list, this one’s price has dropped significantly from last week, with an additional $583 in savings. This is the best price we’ve seen for this model. Mattress shoppers who come to Essentia for organic materials won’t be disappointed in the performance of the company’s natural rubber latex-based foam. This mattress performed excellently for petite and average-sized back sleepers. Large/tall back sleepers and all side sleepers will also find very good performance. The discount will apply automatically when you add the mattress to your cart.
Back sleepers who want an adjustable air mattress will find excellent support in the Sleep Number p6 smart bed, whether you’re petite or large and tall. It’s now about $250 less than you’ll see outside of major sales, making it a great time to buy. In our survey, CR members reported that the Sleep Number brand delivered excellent comfort and very good owner satisfaction. The model is fairly durable, with little sagging or softening over time, and testers found it to be very stable: One sleeper’s tossing shouldn’t bother a partner overnight.

Power Tools
This DeWalt DCD701F2 drill is $40 less than it was a few weeks ago. It has excellent power and above-average speed—plus, its handling is very good, too. It won’t take long to charge, and it won’t be especially noisy while working. This drill weighs 2.4 pounds, making it lighter than average. That said, it has a plastic chuck and doesn’t come with any bit storage.
Ego’s battery-powered outdoor equipment consistently gets top marks from our testers, and this one is now $20 less than it was recently. Consumer Reports has rated the following products from its 56-volt battery platform: string trimmers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, a hedge trimmer, and lawn mowers. This system of tools also includes a highly rated snow blower and a very good pressure washer, though they didn’t factor into the Overall Score. Tools can be bought with and without a battery, and you can buy a charger that takes two batteries at once. Ego also has a three-year warranty for its batteries.
This is a great deal on one of our highest-performing impact drivers, meant for heavy-duty jobs. The 24-volt Flex FX1351-2A delivers plenty of power, lasts sufficiently long on a single charge, and then recharges quickly. It’s not the lightest tool at 3.8 pounds, or the quietest, but it’s an excellent pick if you’re looking for a tool powerful enough to efficiently tackle bigger projects, like framing walls or building a deck.
Large Appliances
The LG LREL6321S single oven is an exceptionally strong performer at a great price, especially since it’s $50 less than it was during the last big sale. It heats fast and simmers steadily on top of the stove, earning an excellent performance rating in our cooktop high and low tests. It also bakes and broils evenly. There’s no convection mode, but you’ll find a warming element, along with two high-powered burners on the cooktop. LG earned high reliability ratings for its electric ovens based on our member surveys.
The GE GZS22IYNFS, $100 less than last week, is a 36-inch-wide side-by-side stainless steel refrigerator that performs well in most of our tests. It receives a top-level score for thermostat performance and very good scores for ease of use and temperature uniformity. However, it receives just satisfactory ratings in our energy efficiency and noise tests. As for features, it includes a built-in water filter, a through-the-door ice and water dispenser, and digital temperature controls. It also has edge-to-edge shelves and full-coverage LED lighting.
One of the most budget-friendly top-load agitators in our tests, the LG WT7005CW is now the best price we’ve seen in nearly a year. This eco-friendly Green Choice washer isn’t the gentlest on clothes, but it conserves energy and water. It’s among the quietest models in our tests and causes little to no vibration, meaning it won’t disturb you with rumbling. The cycle time is 70 minutes using the normal-wash, heavy-soil setting. Shorten it by using the normal soil setting whenever possible.

Kitchen Tools
The large Cuisinart AIR-200 has a window and a light so you can see your food cooking, and its large six-quart capacity means there’s enough room to cook for a crowd or to air fry an entire meal. Touchscreen controls come with five cooking pre-sets, including one for frozen snacks and one for leftovers, and a toss reminder alerts you when it’s time to flip your food. The AIR-200 also comes with a generous three-year warranty.
The Technivorm Moccamaster KBT (79112) is an unconventional-looking drip coffee maker that has a thermal carafe and takes a cone-type filter. And you can expect good flavor for your beans from this machine, considering that, in our tests, it earns a very good score for brew performance (a coffee maker’s ability to brew coffee between 195° F and 205° F for five or six minutes, resulting in optimal taste). It earns mediocre scores for convenience and carafe handling, yet Technivorm is a rare brand of coffee maker that receives excellent scores for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction in CR’s member surveys.
The GE Profile Opal 2.0 Nugget Icemaker is one of the best options on the market, according to CR’s tests. GE claims it can produce up to 24 pounds of ice a day (our testing did not last long enough to hit the max). It’s also among the quieter icemakers we tried. This slick-looking model makes the nugget type of ice and does it faster than all other models, which earned it the only top score for speed. It also has the highest water capacity and features a large, removable plastic water reservoir, which means fewer refills. It is the priciest in our ratings, making this discount even more important if you’re thinking of buying it.
This icemaker was about $50 less recently at Best Buy, but this is the lowest price right now across multiple retailers’ sites.
Salt & Pepper Grinder
Ogednac Electric Salt and Pepper Grinder Set
The Ogednac Electric Salt and Pepper Grinder Set is less powerful than many of the other grinders we tried, with a 20-second lag between starting the mill and dispensing the product. The grind is very smooth, and the finest setting creates fine powder. It’s also quiet and easy to handle, especially for kids. And the LED lights show how charged the battery is and illuminate where the salt and pepper landed. But it’s hard to clean because the reservoir doesn’t detach from the mill.

Ice Bath
Pod Company Pro IcePod 2.0
This portable ice bath from Pod Company is now $20 less than I’ve ever seen, making it an even better deal than usual. It’s a great option if you’re thinking of investing in something like this to keep at home. In our evaluations, it was easy to set up and take apart. It is smaller than the comparable Cold Pod XL (which costs a bit more), but otherwise, the two are very similar. So it may be better suited for smaller individuals. For example, one of our evaluators was around 6 feet tall and about 200 pounds and found this one to be a bit cramped compared to the other model. That said, if you don’t mind close quarters and like the price to test out ice baths at home, this could be just what you’re looking for.
Each dumbbell in the Core Home Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Set is automatically balanced because of the easy, one-handed adjustment of simply twisting the handle. Like the NordicTrack and PowerBlock sets below, the Core Home dumbbell comes with a good handgrip, and each dumbbell is shorter at lighter weights. Still, we found that each can be harder to replace in the cradle in some settings. At heavier settings, the dumbbells didn’t come out of their cradle without holding the cradle down.
This rugged-looking (and high-performing) Samsung smartwatch is aimed at outdoors enthusiasts—and anyone who wants the latest premium health- and fitness-tracking features. Just note that Galaxy Watches work only with Android devices. The price has been falling steadily.
